Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for healing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also used for other conditions as suggested by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Talk to your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing healing with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking Allopurinol even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you respond to this medicine. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms don't improve or if they worsen, talk to your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been directed. Don't take less or more or take it more often than determined by your physician.
